Laser Dental Implantation
Dentistry is one of the few fields of medicine in Ukraine and worldwide where the application of new technologies has become commonplace. Laser technology is also widely used in dentistry. Indeed, in Kyiv, laser dental implantation is offered by a large number of clinics. What is the essence of this technology? In which cases is the use of a laser necessary, and in which is it not? What role does the laser play during implantation? We recommend that patients familiarize themselves with the answers to these key questions and only then make a decision about laser dental implantation.
Laser dental implantation is not an accurate definition, although it is quite widespread. It would be more correct to speak about dental implantation with the use of a laser, since this instrument does not participate in the process of directly placing the implant but can only be used at the stage of tissue incision.
Laser implantation can only be discussed as a method of gum incision; the implant placement technology itself remains traditional. Dental implantation is not performed with a laser.
A laser is a device that passes a laser beam through a crystal or semiconductor. This beam can be used to affect soft or hard tissues.
Types of lasers in dentistry
| Laser type | Application in dentistry |
| Erbium laser | Used for affecting hard tissues (bones, teeth) |
| Diode laser | Used for affecting soft tissues (mucosa, gums) |
To install an implant, it is necessary to make an incision in the oral mucosa (gums) and periosteum. Thus, laser dental implantation implies that the incision will be made using a diode laser. A hole forms at the intended implantation site, which is immediately coagulated (covered with a crust) and does not become infected.
In Kyiv clinics, laser dental implantation has become very popular: doctors talk a lot about the advantages, but there are also disadvantages.
Use of diode laser during implantation
| Advantages | Disadvantages |
| impossibility of infection; no need for suturing | doctor cannot see the full clinical picture; possibility of burns; possibility of implant rejection; worse wound healing |
In traditional implantation, a sterile scalpel is used, so the possibility of wound infection is minimized.
Advantages of using a scalpel:
- provides better diagnostic capability for the doctor;
- promotes faster and more physiological healing.
Laser dental implantation is impossible with the use of an erbium laser. Because implant placement requires the use of a special surgical kit designed for a specific implant system. In other words: each type of implant requires its own type of instruments needed to create a hole in the bone into which the implant is directly placed.
The use of an erbium laser for bone grafting operations or reconstructions is very traumatic. Osadchyi Dental Clinic specializes in maxillofacial surgery, and we do not recommend the use of an erbium laser due to its very high level of traumatism. In some cases, we use a piezotome (ultrasonic device), which interacts with bone tissues rather than soft tissues.

Extensive experience
Стаж работы челюстно-лицевой хирурга 38 лет, из них 8 лет — работа дежурным врачом отделения острой травмы.

Number of surgeries
Over 2,000 successful surgeries in the field of maxillofacial surgery.

Quality of work
Thanks to a thorough approach in diagnostics and treatment planning for each clinical case, we achieve a minimal number of complications.
Laser dental implantation in Kyiv is a fairly common service. However, we recommend traditional scalpel incision to our patients, as it promotes more physiological healing and does not carry additional risks. At the same time, at Osadchyi Dental Clinic, we widely use laser technology, but for performing other operations.
At our clinic, laser is used for:
- removal of neoplasms in the oral cavity;
- removal of neoplasms on the face (pigment spots, warts, nevi, papillomas, etc.);
- removal of neoplasms followed by biopsy;
- tongue or lip frenulum plastic surgery;
- soft tissue operations in the oral cavity (gingivoplasty).
Advantages of using laser during operations:
- wound coagulation (crust formation) and no need for suturing;
- ability to perform extended biopsy operations with deep removal to healthy tissues.
Dental clinics offering laser implantation in Kyiv, and elsewhere, typically also offer laser teeth whitening services. We recommend our patients approach laser teeth whitening responsibly.
Absolutely all teeth whitening products contain chemicals that harm teeth. Therefore, after whitening (whether at home or at a clinic), teeth remineralization must be performed.
During laser whitening, a smaller amount of chemical substance is applied to the teeth, but thanks to the light effect, whitening occurs better. It is important to understand that any whitening, including with a laser, is a direct path to dental implantation. Patients must understand the full extent of the risk.
Laser dental implantation in Kyiv is available at a number of clinics, and accordingly, the cost of the service may vary. At the same time, the use of a laser does not directly affect the success of implantation; the prognosis with traditional methods is the same. Laser dental implantation, the price of which is much higher, is rather popular than clinically justified.
The price of laser dental implantation in Kyiv will be higher than when performing implantation using a scalpel. This is due exclusively to economic factors. The cost of laser dental implantation includes the clinic’s expenses for purchasing equipment and the cost of disposable attachments.
Dental implantation with laser application is justified only in rare cases when there is a sufficient amount of bone supply. At our clinic, we do not recommend using a laser during implantation.
No, the method of soft tissue incision — with a laser or scalpel — does not in any way affect the probability and speed of implant integration. The success of the operation depends on the doctor’s skill, the amount of bone supply, implant quality, and other factors; however, the use or non-use of a laser makes no difference.
Modern dentistry assumes that the patient should not experience any pain at all. We use good gentle anesthesia, so there is no need to worry about pain. You will not feel either the scalpel incision or the laser beam working.
