Straumann implants
Straumann is a Swiss premium dental implant system that specializes in classic screw-type implantation. The main features of the system are the hydrophilic SLActive surface for accelerated osseointegration, Roxolid material with increased strength, and high precision of the implant-abutment connection. Straumann implants are known for high primary stability and predictable esthetic results even in complex clinical cases.

Sooner or later, all dental patients face the question of implantation. It may involve replacing one lost tooth or prosthetic restoration on implants, but in any case, implantation has become quite a popular procedure. This explains patients’ interest in different manufacturers of dental implants.
At Dr. Osadchiy’s Clinic, we insist that there are no ideal implants in general. But there are implants that are ideally suited to a specific clinical situation. The patient should take the doctor’s opinion and recommendations into account, because the specialist relies on many factors, considering not only design and price, but also the patient’s individual features.

Straumann Group is a Swiss dental implant brand that can safely be called the best advertised one. As a rule, this is the brand that comes to mind when implants are mentioned in dentistry. The manufacturer places its implants in the premium segment and strictly monitors quality.
At the same time, it should be noted that Straumann is focused on classic implantation or implantation with immediate loading. In other words, their implants are well suited to cases where the patient has sufficient bone availability and no other factors that would complicate implantation.
However, doctors often offer Straumann implants together with bone augmentation procedures when there is not enough native bone volume to place a screw-type implant. At Dr. Osadchiy’s Clinic, we do not consider bone-grafting material an ideal solution and recommend Straumann implants only when the individual clinical situation is favorable.

Straumann implants by design
The Straumann range includes only classic screw-type implants. The threaded design provides good primary stability and reliable fixation of the implant in bone tissue.
The manufacturer pays special attention to the precision of the implant-abutment connection, which helps reduce micro-mobility of the structure and lowers the risk of inflammatory processes around the implant.

Short Straumann implants
Straumann offers short implants for minimal bone availability. But unlike short I-System Plateau implants, Straumann still uses screw-type implants, whose placement with minimal bone availability often requires additional bone-grafting surgeries.
In addition, the Straumann system uses a special Loxim implant driver with an integrated controlled break point. If the load during placement exceeds the permitted value, the instrument breaks before the internal implant structure can be damaged or excessive pressure on bone can occur. In effect, this is an additional safety system that helps preserve structural stability and reduce the risk of complications during implant placement.
Standard Straumann implants
The main Straumann system range consists of standard implants 8 mm and longer. They are used in classic implantation when there is sufficient bone volume.
Features of standard Straumann implants:
- high stability
- a wide selection of sizes
- universal application
- compatibility with different prosthetic solutions
Narrow Straumann implants
Narrow implants are used when there is insufficient space between teeth or limited bone width.
Most often, such implants are used:
- in the anterior zone
- in esthetically significant areas
- with a narrow alveolar ridge

Most implants offered on the market are made of titanium. Straumann also has titanium implants. But the brand’s unique offering is implants made from Roxolid material.
Roxolid is an alloy based on titanium and zirconium. Zirconium is considered to strengthen the structure, allowing the doctor to use implants of smaller diameter and length.
It is also worth noting that the combination of Roxolid material and the SLActive surface performs well even in patients from risk groups. Studies show a high level of implant integration in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Quality of work
Thanks to a thorough approach in diagnostics and treatment planning for each clinical case, we achieve a minimal number of complications.
One of Straumann’s main features is the SLActive® surface. It is a special hydrophilic implant surface that helps accelerate osseointegration and improve contact between the implant and bone tissue.
The implant surface undergoes multi-stage treatment:
- sandblasting
- acid etching
- special chemical surface preparation
After treatment, the surface becomes microrough and more active in interacting with blood and bone tissue.
The main feature of SLActive is high hydrophilicity. The surface literally “attracts” blood, which helps to:
- accelerate new bone formation
- improve integration
- increase implant stability
- shorten osseointegration time
Every implant brand has its own specialization. For Straumann, the main feature of the system is the combination of classic screw-type implantation, modern materials, high manufacturing precision and digital technologies.
Straumann implants are widely used in both standard and complex clinical cases, especially when treatment predictability, esthetics and long-term structural stability are important.
The advantages of Straumann implants include:
- high precision of implant and prosthetic component manufacturing
- high primary stability
- good predictability of integration
- possibility to work with different bone types
- stable implant-abutment connection
- high esthetics of prosthetic restoration
- possibility of immediate loading
It is difficult to answer this question unequivocally. Much depends on the individual clinical situation, and the doctor’s skill is also important. The manufacturer provides a warranty for implants, but only with strict adherence to placement protocols and standards. This is largely why we often say: do not choose an implant, choose a doctor. As for specific figures, Straumann cites the following numbers: integration of Roxolid SLActive implants over a 2-year period is 97%, and over a 5-year period is 94%.
In theory, yes. Straumann offers short and narrow implants that can be used with bone tissue deficiency. However, it is important to understand that Straumann is still a classic screw-type implant system. This means that placing their implants in conditions of bone deficiency will require the use of bone-grafting material. We have written and spoken a lot about the drawbacks of these methods, so not to repeat ourselves, let’s put it this way: at Dr. Osadchiy’s Clinic, we avoid ineffective, dangerous and often unjustified surgical interventions.
It cannot be said that these manufacturers offer implants of different quality levels: both are excellent. But in terms of differences, Straumann are classic screw-type implants. They are good for implantation in ideal or near-ideal conditions, when there are no problems with bone availability. I-System focuses on short Plateau-system implants capable of solving implantation tasks in conditions of bone deficiency.
