Dental Fillings
At some point, every person faces the need for dental fillings. It is time to understand in which cases they are necessary, how temporary fillings differ from permanent ones, and why a microscope and aesthetic filling are needed.
The most popular procedure in dentistry can confidently be called dental filling. Active gastronomic experiments, availability of sweets, hygiene and heredity directly affect how often you will come to your dentist with a request to place a filling. It would be great to do without this during regular check-ups. However, a filling placed more than five years ago may need replacement, and with chronic caries, the risk of a new cavity is always present.
Let us figure out what to expect from the filling procedure and what types exist.
If the tooth tissues are affected by caries, you need to fill the tooth. This will restore the chewing function of the dental unit, as well as its correct shape. Most importantly, it will prevent further multiplication of bacteria, which without treatment can reach the pulp and root of the dental unit.

- an existing filling has fallen out;
- a hole in the tooth, i.e. a carious cavity, has been detected;
- a crack or chip has appeared;
- there has been an injury to the dental unit;
- sharp pain has appeared;
- the enamel reacts to hot, cold, sour, or sweet.
There are few contraindications for dental fillings:
- inability to isolate the cavity from moisture (the filling will not hold on the tooth);
- subgingival destruction (there is a risk of traumatization and spread of bacteria deep into the root);
- tooth destruction of more than 1/3 (in this case, a crown is recommended).
Relative contraindications include exacerbation (manifestation) of herpes, gum diseases, bruxism, and pregnancy. In all these cases, an individual approach to the patient is necessary, assessing the risks and durability of the treatment result.
The main material used for dental fillings is composite, or photopolymer. It is a fairly durable filling material that hardens when a light or chemical method is applied. It is photopolymer that is chosen for permanent fillings.
A permanent filling is filling a cavity in a tooth with a reliable material that provides the dental unit with an aesthetic appearance (does not differ from enamel in shape and shade) and functionality. Such a filling can last more than five years, but it is important to monitor its height so that in case of wear, the correct anatomy of the dental unit can be restored.
A temporary filling is necessary to restore the functionality and shape of the tooth, as well as to have quick access to the tooth cavity. This is necessary when placing special medicinal preparations (for example, in case of pulpitis or gum bedsore), so that the permanent filling is placed when the doctor is confident in the health of your tooth.
Dental treatment (filling) also involves placing temporary fillings. They can also be made of composite or cement (silicate or silicophosphate). The price of placing a filling on a tooth is significantly lower, but such a “patch” lasts from 1 to 30 days.

Dental fillings in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine are increasingly performed using a microscope to:
- examine the carious cavity or dental canal at 40x magnification;
- remove all infected tissue without leaving a millimetre of caries, thus stopping its spread for a long time;
- preserve the maximum amount of healthy tissue without touching it with a drill;
- ensure complete filling of the canals with filling material.
And this is not counting all the manipulations in implantology, orthodontics and surgery, for which the microscope is also indispensable.

- when the filling is damaged;
- in case of a violation of the integrity of the dental unit (crack, chip);
- in case of rapid wear of the dental enamel;
- when darkening or a yellow tint appears on the enamel.
Filling a tooth in such situations is even easier than during therapeutic filling. Drilling is almost unnecessary, and the main task is selecting a composite that matches the shade of your dental enamel. This is how both the restoration of chewing teeth and the filling of front teeth are performed. If it is necessary to straighten the dental row, a filling on a front tooth can be replaced with veneers or lumineers. However, it is important to understand that their installation takes more time and requires grinding of the enamel. Therefore, it is much more advantageous to place a filling: the price will be several times lower, and the result will be no less impressive.

It is important to understand that the cost of dental fillings in Kyiv depends on the level of the clinic you have visited, and on the qualifications of your treating dentist. And also on the complexity of the case: the cost of dental fillings in the presence of significant carious damage involves the use of a larger volume of materials and an increase in the duration of visits.

Although the lifespan of baby teeth is quite short, the condition of the permanent tooth buds directly depends on their health, as caries can also spread to them. That is why their condition needs to be monitored just as carefully as the teeth that have already grown in, and if necessary, filling should be performed by a paediatric dentist.
Using a dental drill, the tooth is cleaned of the carious lesion and dried. Then the filling material is applied, which hardens under the influence of chemical compounds or ultraviolet light. Next, the filling is polished so that the height and shape of the tooth become physiological for the patient and the filling is not felt in the mouth. That’s it!
