Tooth extraction operations in surgical dentistry are the most common. Significantly destroyed, damaged, injured, and diseased teeth that cannot be treated or whose treatment the doctor considers impractical are subject to extraction.

Previously, tooth extractions were performed during so-called mixed appointments, during which one specialist performed both treatment and tooth extraction operations. However, today in most clinics in Kyiv, tooth extraction operations are carried out during a separate appointment.

It is believed that tooth-preserving operations are an alternative to tooth extraction and allow the patient’s own teeth to be used for some additional time. Hemisection — this surgical operation in dentistry is necessary to preserve a tooth, one of whose roots is destroyed. After hemisection, a healthy tooth root remains, on which a crown is placed.

Replantation — to avoid tooth extraction, surgical dentistry used the operation of transplanting the patient’s own tooth from one socket to another. Previously, replantation could also be performed to extract the patient’s own tooth, carry out treatment, and subsequently place the tooth back into the same socket. This technique is outdated, and its low success rate speaks for itself: only about 5% of cases are successful. The need for replantation operations disappeared with the advent and spread of implants.

Root tip resection — this type of operation is usually performed in the presence of neoplasms on the tooth root and involves the removal of the neoplasm and cutting off the tip of the tooth root. It is most often performed on the frontal group of teeth, as their roots are easier to access.

The range of surgical dentistry services also includes implantation. The placement of implants, regardless of their configuration, type, and quantity, is always performed through surgical intervention.

It is important to note that in a number of clinics in Kyiv, surgical dentistry also includes sinus lift services.

A sinus lift is an operation to increase the volume of bone tissue on the upper jaw in order to obtain a greater bone supply for implant placement.

From the perspective of medicine and law, the performance of sinus lift operations by a dental surgeon is questionable, since during this procedure, the doctor goes beyond the oral cavity and penetrates the nasal area. Such operations should be performed not by a dental surgeon but by a maxillofacial surgeon.

Surgical dentistry, where prices often depend on the degree of neglect of the disease, is a quite complex field. The difference between surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery from other areas of dentistry is also that neglected cases of diseases can be life-threatening for patients.

We do not want to scare, but we warn our clients: untimely consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon or dental surgeon can significantly reduce the patient’s quality of life, and sometimes even lead to a fatal outcome.
