Wisdom tooth extraction. Clinical case
The position of the 8th tooth was such that it was in contact with the roots of the adjacent tooth (putting pressure on the neighboring tooth and destroying it)
Removal of an atypically positioned tooth
Surgery to remove the wisdom tooth (8th tooth) using a piezotome (ultrasonic scalpel)
7 days
A patient was referred to us by another dental clinic (where he was undergoing orthodontic treatment). The patient was sent to us for the removal of an atypically positioned 8th tooth (“wisdom tooth“). Performing such surgical procedures in a regular dental office is risky, as complications may arise.
The position of the 8th tooth was such that it was in contact with the roots of the adjacent tooth (putting pressure on the neighboring tooth and destroying it).
The complexity of removing an atypically positioned tooth lies in the fact that the procedure must not be traumatic. This requires the use of specialized instruments such as a piezotome (an ultrasonic scalpel that “cuts” bone and tooth), as well as knowledge and techniques for complex tooth extractions.
The complexity of this clinical case was that the 8th tooth was firmly embedded in the bone, not in the tooth socket. Its crown and roots were tightly adjacent to the bone. Removal of such a tooth can only be performed by cutting the tooth out of the bone.
First, we removed the bone covering the tooth from above. We made a “window” in the bone with an ultrasonic scalpel to see the tooth. We carefully cut the tooth with the piezotome and removed it in pieces to avoid damaging the nerve, bone, and other tissues.
After extracting the tooth from the bone, the area where the tooth was located is cleaned and treated with an antibiotic solution. Then this empty space is filled with a blood clot and sutured.
Usually, tooth extraction is a rough surgical procedure. At our clinic, however, it is performed very gently and delicately. This is precisely how we achieve rapid healing and quick patient recovery.
The recovery period after the wisdom tooth extraction surgery was 7 days. Over the next 3-6 months, the bone cavity will continue to form at the site of the extracted tooth.
